Start with a solid object like a ruler or narrow, smooth stick.
Place in the pony's mouth and snug it upwards to the corner of the mouth on each side.
Mark the outside object on each side of the lips and measure the distance.
Make sure to measure headstall you'll need according to the kind of bit you are using.

NOTE: The mouthpiece measurement of the bits are NOT taken from inside the cheekpiece to inside the cheekpiece. The measurement for of the bit accounts for the needed space to prevent pinching. For example on the cow pony bit, the measurement of the bit starts inside of the ring that slides on the cheekpiece.
